NDM News case study: Audience and Institution

1) Read this extract from the Ofcom 2014 report on the consumption of the news in the UK. What are the key statistics relating to the influence of new and digital media?

News consumption in the UK
  • 95% of adults in the UK use say they follow the use and 95% say they use the TV a as source of news.
  • There is a growth in the number of those who use any internet apps for news, with over four in ten (41%) doing so this year, compared to a third (37%) last year.
  • Over a quarter (28%) of those who consume in the UK named BBC, compared to over ove-third (34%) in 2013
  • Since 2013, there has been an increase in the number of people starting a website/app as their most important news source
TV news consumption
  • Figures show that adults watched an average of 115 hours of news and TV in 2013 and the same with the year before
  • The majority was 64% on BBC One or BBC Two news channel.
  • However, 16-24 year old's only consumed 27 hours of news on TV, compared to 196 hours for those ages 55+
Attitudes towards different types of news
  • UK politics and current affairs and worldwide current affairs are see to have societal importance by half (49%) of UK adults, crime by 48% and weather by 45%.
  • Younger and older age groups find different news topics personally interesting. Among 16-24s, specific news categories such as crime, sports, technology and science/environment fall into the top ten topics, while over 55s are more likely to nominate general world news.
Reasons to follow the news
  • 3 in 5 adults (58%) in the UK say they follow the news to find out what is going on around the world
  • Another reason is what is going on in the UK (56%), followed by what is going on in the local area (49%)
  • Also, to know what is going on in respective nations (46%)
  • Lastly as they say it is important to keep informed about certain issues (42%)
2) Come up with an example of an institution that has benefited from the changes new and and digital media has brought to the news industry. Explain how new technology has helped the institution and try to find statistics or financial figures that support your point.

In my opinion, i believe that the institution that has benefited from the changes in new and digital media is Google. This is due to the fact that more people now have greater access to the internet as they can use it at home on their computer, in schools, on their mobile phones etc. and it is much easier for audiences to reach a variety of information due to new technology. This means that Google has more viewers - becoming more known globally. For example, in 2003 only 46% of people had access to the internet, however this has risen dramatically to 83% in 2013.

3)Find an example of an institution that has suffered as a result of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. In what way has it had a negative impact? Again, try and find actual statistics or financial figures to explain your point.

Ealing Gazette is a newspaper that has suffered as a results of the changes new and digital media has brought to the news industry. This is due to that fact that readers have started reading news online from bigger institutions, causing the Ealing Gazette to go into a decline as less readers are reading the papers. this also means that people are stating to loose their jobs and wages are decreasing.

4) Who has benefited most from the changes in new and digital media have had on the news industry - audiences or institutions?

In my opinion, i believe that the audiences have benefited dramatically because of new and digital technology. This is due to the fact that, audiences now have greater access to the internet as well access to a wider range of information as they have a wealth of information available at all times via broadband, wi-fi and multi platform mobile devise such as the iPhone and the Blackberry. Both adults and younger people use the internet for a variety of things e.g teenagers use it to listen to music and adults use it to look up news around the world, for example 3 in 5 adults (58%) in the UK say they watch the news to find out what is going on around the world.

Furthermore, the term convergence means that all digital content can be accessed in one place for the cost of broadband or subscription via Sky or Virgin on the move via a device such as an iPod or notebook computer and as nowadays more and more people are having access to this new technology, means that they are at an advantage as they get to access information quicker, easier and cheaper. Also, news comes from newspapers online, RSS feeds, blogs and news organisation websites such as BBC News who also supply podcasts. Due new and digital technology, audiences are able to access this via there phones, laptops etc. However, the younger generation watch the news for different things to the older generation such as science. For example, Among 16-24s, specific news categories such as crime, sports, technology and science/environment fall into the top ten topics, while over 55s are more likely to nominate general world news.

The most common form of watching news is by TV. For example 95%  of adults say they use the TV a as source of news. There is a growth in the number of those who use any internet apps for news, with over four in ten (41%) doing so this year, compared to a third (37%) last year and over a quarter (28%) of those who consume in the UK named BBC, compared to over one-third (34%) in 2013. Also, since 2013, there has been an increase in the number of people starting a website/app as their most important news source.

Figures show that adults watched an average of 115 hours of news and TV in 2013 and the same with the year before. The majority was 64% on BBC One or BBC Two news channel. However, 16-24 year old's only consumed 27 hours of news on TV, compared to 196 hours for those ages 55 plus. Furthermore, missing one your programmes is not a major problem, as it is available on the BBC iplayer and the other mainstream channels have similar devices. In addition, if people want to show the world their videos to the film, they are able to make a You Tube account and upload it onto there.

Additionally, availability of interactive features are social networking sites such as Fcaebook, Twitter and internet blogs, Also Skype which allows you to make long distance calls, video calls and emails. This benefits the audience, as it allows them to interact with people out of the country and in their society. They can engage in what is happening all over the world e.g by looking at news on social networking sites etc. Also , new developments include the hybrid television where social networking sites, emails and the internet are accessible on your TV screen, so whatever you want to watch or do online, can be done on your TV.  Moreover, on demand means music, feature films and television and all the content of the internet are available on a laptop with wi-fi, again having a hige advantage on the audiences.

However, the institution that has benefited from the changes in new and digital media as well as audiences is Google. This is due to the fact that more people now have greater access to the internet e.g by using their phones etc. and it is much easier for audiences to reach a variety of information. This means that Google has more viewers - becoming more known globally.

3 articles from friday's lesson

The Guardian: Facebook Empathy Button

I looked at Leila's article and she looked at Facebook empathy button, which is about Facebook introducing a new button 'empathy' as an alternative button to the 'like' button. Her opinions on it were that people need to be more real wit their emotions and it helps the users to give actual opinions rather than fake ones. In my opinion i agree as peopel do need to start showing their real emotions rather than their fake ones.

Abused dog sings 'I Will Survive' in latest Blue Cross animal charity advert

I looked at Rabia's article which explored Blue Cross new approach of promoting re-homing and preventing dog abuse. It showed that the dogs are not being vividly hurt or abused, the moral and sorry shined through. Her opinion on it was that she really liked the advert as 'having not read the article, i watched the advert myself one day during the x-factor break and that the prime time to target families and melt the children's hearts', which i agree with as it allows millions of children and animal lovers to take some action.

Emojis and quizzes led the way at Social Media Week 2015
James Whatley on stage at Social Media Week 2015

I looked at Ashmita's article which spoke about how social media week has changed a lot over the past four or five years. The industry has continued to evolve as does the output of participants. It has started from agencies, platforms and brands creating mini pop-up events  which has now developed into a three day summit. Her opinion on the article was that she believes emoji's have been very popular as a lot of people use it on their smart phones etc to show their emotions, which i agree with.

#3 Amazon launches gaming and 4K streaming Fire TV update

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/17/amazon-launches-gaming-4k-streaming-fire-tv-update

Amazon has moved into the 4K content with a new fire TV box and ultra-high definition content through its video streaming service. They claim that this has been the best selling box on the market in the UK and Germany, beating Apple. Also, the new Fire TV is 75% faster and handles 4K content; it has a more efficient compression system for full HD content which allows many users to stream 1080p video even with poor connection. Furthermore, the company had released a new games controller with headphones and voice search support, claiming to have the largest games library of any media streaming service with over 3,000 apps, games and channels available through the amazon apps store.
  • Connection speeds of at least 15Mbps will be requires for 4K content.
  • Ultra-HD content
  • The new Fire TV costs £79.99
  • The box has instruction videos and Amzaon's built in live person tech support called MayDay, which guides users through features and settings via the phone and with a remote control.
In my opinion, i argue that amazons new Fire TV is very useful as it allows consumers even with poor connection to watch movies or games in ultra-HD content. Its so annoying having to watch them in poor quality with poor connection and so this new TV solves all our problems. However, it only allows the audieces to watch content from the amazon app and so movies or games which you really want to watch may not be in their store. But overall, it is a good invention to sell.

#4 Social media is harming the mental health of teenagers. The state has to act

Social  networking sites have had huge pressures on teenagers these days. Teenagers are constantly on them and are addicted to it. A study showed that teenagers who engage in social media during the night could be damaging their sleep and increasing their risk of anxiety and depression. It also said that teenager spoke about how they had to be available 24/7, resulting in anxiety if they do not respond to texts or posts immediately. They are so emotionally addicted to these sites that if they wake up during the middle of the night, they will log on, to make sure they don't miss out on anything, Its becoming more and more obvious how the pressures of social media is disprportionatley affecting teenage girls.

  • Teenagers need 9.5 hours of sleep each night but on average receive only 7.5 hours.
  • Children younger than 15 year olds are addicted
  • Girls are more likely to seek comfort on social media when worried rather than someone in person
  • Girls stress twice as more than boys a week
  • A lack of sleep can make teenagers tires, irritable, depresses and more liekly to catch colds, flu and gastroenteritis.
In my opinion, i think that teenagers are becoming extremely addicted to these social networking sites as i always see students and children on their phones taking selfies or checking the newest updates and messages on their phones, Some even stay up really late at night just by being on their phones. A phone should only really be used for calls and texts for emergency's or contacting family/friends/people for needed things.

#1 How live video on periscope helped get inside the Syrian refugees story.

Journalist Bild, found a way to use his smartphone to help those people tell their stories direct to readers. Paul travelled with the Syrian refugees to their destination, Germany. His broadcasts on the periscope app were live and often focused on refugees, with several reappearing regularly to talk about their experience. Views increased from 15,000 to 33,000. He says “In Germany we have been having a big discussion about the intensity of media coverage of this story. But on Periscope, everybody could see it was live". In addition, he added that he was able to get inside the stories of the refugees and gain an insight of what thy're lives are really like and tell the world the truth.

  • 15,000 followers to 33,000
  • he used his smart phone with the help of the periscope app
  • 30 people on the boat
  • 16 minute documentary on his website

In my opinion, i think this was a really good idea as it allows the world to see what refugees lives are really like, which can help the wider population change the way we see them and hopefully or eventually help them out.

#2 How Instagram is becoming more gay

Instamgram has said to becoming more gay and over taken by gay men and women. For example, if you look up #instagay you'll see 45 million posts and recently a bunch of accounts have have sprung up celebrating all things like gay marriage etc. Furthermore, it just emphasises the fact that whatever hashtag you write which has the word gay in it, you'll find thousands of posts with gay men and women. Also, people may even say that deep down a disproportion number of gay men struggle with low levels of self esteem. They are usually good at smartening up the surface making themselves and everyhitg around look attractive, which may explain why  they've been over-represented in fashion etc to such an extent it has become a stereotype.

  • More than 45 million posts
  • Using the hashtags #instagay etc allows you to search fro millions of gay people around the world if feeling lonely

In my opinion, i don't think instagram is becoming more gay, this is due to the fact that if it was, you'd see thousands and thousand of gay pictures of men and women everywhere you look on insta. However, when i tried searching something i did come across a gay account with 180k followers, suggesting gay people are now becoming more popular on social networking sites.

The impact of google

1) Why has Google led to the decline of the newspaper industry?
Crtics of google have argued how much the advertising money has disappeared from the newspaper business over the past decade or so, which is $40 billion, according to the Newspaper association of Amercia. Also, the newspapers would have been estimated of $60 billion by now, if the growth rate that the industry saw during the 1990s had continued through the past decade.

2) Do you personally think Google is to blame for newspapers closing and journalists losing their jobs? Why?
In my opinion, i think that Google is to blame for newspapers losing their jobs. This is due to the fact, that it has now become the norm to look information up online instead of doing it the old-fashioned way. You would rather go onto the internet which is accessible anywhere e.g your phone, then go of out of your way to receive, collect or buy a newspaper and so this leads to the decline in newspapers and journalists losing their jobs, unfortunately.

3) Read the comments below the article. Pick one comment you agree with and one you disagree with and justify your opinions in detail.
Agree - I agree with this comment as I do personally believe that Google is a saviour of journalism than a killer. This is because it has sold us a billion of good things such as information, news, music, movies and so on. Also, talented people, blogs, stories etc have all been discovered by Google, which journalists can then use to help write their stories.

'The irony is that Google is probably more of a savior than a killer of journalism and editorial content. How many thousands of blogs, fan sites, writers, startup outlets, etc., have been discovered by Google’s search algorithms? How many talented artists and great stories have found a launching pad on YouTube and other Google outlets? How much content has been spread into new languages due to Google translate?'

Disagree - I disagree with this comment as the content produced on Google should not cost. Some of us cant even afford simple and basic necessities so what makes you think we can afford the content online? We need general and basic information in order to be caught up in society and know what going on around the world.
'I think the Internet is incredibly poorly designed. Rather than being free, everything on it should cost something in order to compensate creators.'
